Mayor Curry Favors Demolishing the Jacksonville Landing

Mayor Lenny Curry is in favor of the city overtaking the Jacksonville Landing and tearing it down, in favor of a riverfront park. What Curry calls the “front lawn for the core of downtown.” On the sides of the park he envisions two commercial buildings, much smaller in size than the current Landing.

While the Sleiman family has a lease on the property through 2056, the city contends Jacksonville Landing Investments failed to operate the Landing as a first-class retail facility as required by the lease, finding a way to seize and take over. The rebuttle is that the city has made it impossible for them to operate as a first-class retail facility and in turn failed to uphold their part of the lease.

A man has been hospitalized after being struck by lightning while at the beach Monday afternoon, just before 2:45 p.m. He was conscious while being transported to the hospital, and told the lifeguards that he felt the lightning’s charge from his head through his foot.

Atlantic Beach police said about an hour later that lightning from another, larger thunderstorm passed over the beaches and struck the roof of a house and caused a fire that burned through the roof of the home on Oceanwalk Drive South. The couple was home at the time, and although they did not realize that a fire has started at first, they got out safely and no injuries were reported. One third of the attic caught fire.
